That’s fine but sometimes seemingly trivial choices can have a fairly profound effect further down the line, and there’s no easy way to skip back or undo them. The game is reticent to reveal exactly what effect your various dialogue choices have, although if you say something that particularly affects someone then Alex’s face will appear in a though bubble above them – the equivalent of Telltale’s ‘they’ll remember that’ line. Alex’s best friend is verbal diarrhea sufferer Ren, and then there’s his crush the considerably more reserved Nona, bratty it girl Clarissa, and stepbrother Jonas. You play as Alex, who starts off the game as somewhat introverted but who through your dialogue choices can turn into everything from a loud-mouthed braggart to attentive friend, or even more of a recluse. It’s a great system that is perfectly complemented by the characters. Alex comes with an established story and plenty of her own emotional baggage, but most of her choices and how. Two or three dialogue options are usually busy floating above your head and you can select them at any time as the conversation progresses, choosing to interrupt, let others finish, or simply say nothing at all. Straight away, the game does a decent job of establishing some initial character traits and relations that only deepen and evolve as the game progresses: Clarissa has a beef with Alex, Ren has a crush on Nona and Jonas tries to fit in. You guide the outcome with your choices as the well-written dialogue reveals characters coming to terms with family breakdown, death of a sibling, blame and a fraying grip on reality. Unlike the stop-start nature of most narrative games people are almost always talking, and will happily do so with or without your input. Oxenfree is an adventure game where a teenagers’ beach party spirals into a supernatural story. Extremely popular among the students (and well-liked among parents and teachers for her seeming ease at attaining good grades), she nonetheless has. To any outsider, appears to have the world on a string. She used to date Alex's brother Michael before his death the year prior to the game's beginning. This is where many of the game’s most effective scares come from, but still the most interesting part is simply talking to people. Clarissa serves as Oxenfree's somewhat unwitting antagonist.
